The discovery highlights ongoing security concerns in border regions where physical objects like pigeons are used to cross the frontier, prompting immediate local response to potential smuggling or intelligence activities.
An official pointed out that such episodes are not uncommon in border areas of J&K and Punjab, where pigeons have been used for smuggling or for sending messages across the frontier. On Saturday, the pigeon was found near a temple in Samba’s border area of Mawa around 6.40am and was immediately captured by locals after they spotted a ring tied to its leg.
Pigeons have historically been employed for covert communication and smuggling in border areas due to their ability to fly across restricted zones, making them a known vector for cross-border illicit activities in regions like Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.
