The conservation project funded by Portia de Rossi enhances wildlife protection in Rwanda and provides environmental education to thousands of local schoolchildren, showing how celebrity-backed initiatives can impact ecosystems and communities.
In 2018, actress Portia de Rossi presented her wife, television host Ellen DeGeneres, with a significant gift for her sixtieth birthday. This present involved helping to finance a substantial conservation initiative located in Rwanda. The project focused on enhancing the protection of local wildlife while simultaneously providing residents with better opportunities to learn about their natural environment. By September 2023, the facility had attracted a large number of guests. Specifically, the campus welcomed over forty thousand visitors in total. Among these attendees, more than seven thousand were local schoolchildren who participated in the educational aspects of the program.
Rwanda hosts several wildlife reserves where conservation projects aim to protect endangered species and involve local communities through education and tourism; celebrity involvement can bring funding and visibility to such efforts.
