Sinking the former training tank creates new habitat for marine life and can boost local fishing opportunities, directly affecting both the ecosystem and the regional economy.
A 31-ton propane tank and steel tower once used for firefighter training in Mississippi have been sunk about 13 miles offshore to create an artificial reef for marine life. Supported by Chevron and local organisations, the project aims to provide shelter for fish and improve fishing opportunities. A similar reef created in 2023 now supports more than 530 red snapper, according to official estimates.
Artificial reefs are man-made structures placed on the seafloor to provide shelter and breeding grounds for marine species, a practice commonly used to enhance biodiversity and support fisheries.
