Android’s physical navigation buttons are back on Googlebooks, but not the way you think

Reported by The Verge, not nibnow. We are not the publisher of this story, only the source is.

WHY IT MATTERS

Googlebooks users will see familiar Android navigation icons appear on the F1‑F3 keys, a change that could affect how they interact with the service.

WHAT HAPPENED

What year is it, and what dessert name of Android are we up to? | Photo: Antonio G. Di Benedetto / The Verge A common misconception I've seen with Googlebooks is that the Quick Insert and Google logo keys are new. They're not, as they first debuted a couple of years ago on some Chromebooks. But there is something new for Googlebooks that's ripped straight from Android phones circa 2014. On every Googlebook keyboard, the F1, F2, and F3 keys are the old triangle, circle, and square navigation icon

KEY CONTEXT

Android phones around 2014 used triangle, circle, and square icons as physical navigation buttons, and those symbols later appeared on some Chromebook keyboards.

WHAT TO WATCH
  • •Observe whether Googlebooks updates its software to support the new key functions
  • •Watch for user feedback on the impact of the navigation icons on productivity
  • •Monitor if other Google services adopt similar keyboard mappings
